The 10 Minute Musical

THE 10 MINUTE MUSICAL is a 5-day residency program developed by Cathy Nosaty in 2010. Cathy works with two classes in a school: each class works collaboratively to create, develop, rehearse and perform their original 10 minute musical for the other participating class.

She has offered this program through Artists In Education programs through the Ontario Arts Council from 2011 - 2015 and tdsbCREATES from 2016 - 2020.

The 10 MINUTE MUSICAL connects to curriculum with Language, Drama, Dance, Music and whatever subject area the class chooses for their musical: previous 10 Minute Musical themes include ancient Egypt, homelessness, medieval European history, time travel, environmental awareness and water conservation.

“I liked that Cathy was able to incorporate and value the ideas of everyone into our musical. By taking a line from each student, they bought into the work as being their own and were excited about continuing. The students loved having the MP3s to be able to practice at home and share the songs with their families. I like that students felt successful at the end of the day yesterday. Many were outside sharing with their families about their performance and how well they did. I liked that Cathy was able to turn the lyrics into music and that she was always prepared and ready to go with students. She remembered all aspects of our play and the songs and time wasn't wasted on catching up or remembering where we left off.”

10-Minute Musical - Beaches Alternative School Grade 1/2, 2014

“Our two classes had the pleasure of working with the talented artist educator in early September. Our classes created a script and musical to accompany our musicals. The experience was amazing for us and for our students. It was a great way for the class to get to know each other and to bond at the beginning of the year. The creation of the musical fully connects to the curriculum: language, art, music as well as reinforcing learning skills such group work, responsibility and respect for each other. This musical is also an amazing way to show students the how beautiful the inquiry process can be. It also allowed us a chance to see our students shine!”
